We Do Love Pink: If Only Everybody Could Be So Honest

By Alan Smithee

Pink puts it out there. She uses her personal trials and tribulations for artistic expression of the uneasiest sort. Pink gets such joy out of making us uncomfortable. From the piercings and hair and tattoos to hide her natural beauty to her dysfunctional relationships, Pink funks. And rocks. One thing she does not do is hide in the corner and introspect without public confirmation.

Pink is a genius. A genius at putting her feelings and experiences on display. With a hook. And a look. She is the unusual talent in the 21st Century who actually has something relevant to say about the things going on around her and in her life.

Anyway, I could blabber on about her, but just check out this Salvador 'Pink' Dali video, "Please Don't Leave Me."

"HAWTHORNE": Jada Pinkett-Smith

Jada Pinkett Smith (The Women, The Matrix trilogy) executive-produces and stars in HAWTHORNE, a character-driven drama series about a nurse who is a true everyday hero. HAWTHORNE premieres Tuesday, June 16, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT). Pinkett Smith plays Christina Hawthorne, a compassionate and headstrong Chief Nursing Officer heading up a group of dedicated nurses at Richmond Trinity Hospital who spend long days and nights on the hospital’s front lines.

Joining Pinkett Smith in HAWTHORNE is Michael Vartan (Alias) as Dr. Tom Wakefield, the oncologist who treated Christina’s husband and serves as Chief of Surgery for the hospital. The cast also includes Suleka Mathew (Men in Trees) as Bobbie Jackson, a fellow nurse and one of Hawthorne’s best friends; David Julian Hirsh (Lovebites) as Ray Stein, a nurse struggling with being accepted in a female-dominated profession; Christina Moore (90210) as Candy Sullivan, a nurse with a unique sense of duty; and Hannah Hodson (TNT’s The Ron Clark Story) as Camille, Hawthorne’s daughter. In addition, special guest star Joanna Cassidy (Six Feet Under) portrays Amanda, Hawthorne’s mother-in-law, who also happens to be a member of the hospital board. (TNT)

Pinkett-Smith was on "The View" today promoting the show and mentioned that she would be spending two months in Beijing this summer with her son Jaden while he shoots the new "Karate Kid" movie. She will be shocked by the thick air pollution if she has never been there. We hope neither she nor Jaden has asthma. If so be careful. Here is the link to our visit to China in 2007.

SAG Agrees To New Contract Through 2011.

The Screen Actors Guild decided (78% of voting members) to ratify a two-year contract covering movies and prime-time television shows made by the major Hollywood studios. The new contract immediately raises actors' minimum pay by 3% and grants an additional 3.5% raise in the second year of the deal, which along with better pension benefits and some Internet compensation gives them $105 million in overall gains.

About 110,000 guild members were sent ballots and more than 35% cast votes. The new contract did not improve upon the Internet terms that other unions already accepted. Negotiators that were replaced in January had sought more lucrative Web compensation. The battle ended up hurting SAG as TV studios such as ABC, NBC, Fox and CBS sent most of their new work Aftra's way. SAG maintains exclusive jurisdiction over feature films.

The deal comes nearly a year after the last contract expired, meaning guild actors lost out on the first year of proposed raises that the studios estimated totaled nearly $80 million. The new contract took effect after midnight and expires on June 30, 2011.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the coalition of major studios, called the ratification "good news for the entertainment industry." (WSJ, AP, June 10, 2009)

Disney Should Makes Lots of Money with Black Princess

By Holly Wood

Chiquita and Shaniqua will be spending big bucks this Christmas on the Disney movie “The Princess and the Frog,” because the princess is black. The question is whether white preteens will embrace a black princess? Our bet is yes because it is something different and Michelle Obama is a real life queen with two little princesses. The timing couldn't be better. Maybe if this movie had been released any sooner, it might not work. But now even little white girls know that there are real black princesses right here in America. And what little girl would not want to share some of the world inhabited by Sasha and Malia.

Soon Princess Tiana will be right up there with classic Disney characters like Cinderella and Snow White. Princess Tiana is being voiced by Tony-winning actress Anika Noni Rose. “The Princess and the Frog” is set in New Orleans in the 1920s and unfolds against a raucous backdrop of voodoo and jazz. Tiana, a waitress and budding chef dreams of owning a restaurant. Unfortunately she is persuaded to kiss a frog who is really a prince, but the spell backfires and — poof! — she is also an amphibian. Accompanied by a Cajun firefly and a folksy alligator, the couple search for a cure.

We predict this film will be a blockbuster. Oprah Winfrey and the NAACP are looking over Disney's shoulder and so there shouldn't be any stumbles. Plus, AAEA Hollywood is endorsing the film. That sign off should be worth $100 million alone. (NYTimes, 5/29/09)
