J. Lo's Fur Is Okay

Heather Mills McCartney, wife of Paul McCartney has decided to target her anti fur campaign on Latino and African American performers. Her prime targets are Jennifer Lopez and Diddy (Sean Combs). She singled out these two celebrities during Fashion Week in Bryant Park in New York City at a press conference with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Although Ms. Mills-McCartney is right to work for the ethical treatment of animals, she is wrong to make these two minority celebrities the poster children for mistreatment of animals. Ms. Mills-McCartney did not produce any evidence to prove that the animals used to produce Ms. Lopez-Anthony’s fur wear were mistreated. Furthermore, it is an elitist attitude to tell minorities that they cannot participate in the purchase of products or participate in other high-end activities because of esoteric animal rights concerns.

Whites have worn fur for hundreds of years and could afford the expensive furs, while minorities have only recently had the luxury of affording such purchases. The same principle applies for waterfront properties. Right at the point when blacks and other minorities can afford to purchase a beach house, if the gated area is not red lining blacks out of such purchases, environmentalists are working to put such new beach front residential developments off limits. This while many white celebrities work for protection of the outback, they also own homes in the wilderness areas. They like to lock the gate behind them.

So Ms. Mills-McCarthy does a disservice to blacks and other minorities when she says they should not purchase fur products. Next she will be saying they can’t buy chicken.
