Sly Outdoes Original 'Thank You' With New 'Thank You'

I never would have thought that anyone could or would try to top Sly & The Family Stone's "Thank You." Then again, what better person to achieve it than the originator of "Thank You," Sly Stone himself. In his 2011 release, "I'm Back! Family & Friends," Sly revamps "Thank You" and ramps it up at least 33%. Everything is firing more potently.

The energy level is raised on the new version as to render the original version as just an incredible Top 10 hit. The new version lifts the 60's hit to a cult like status. In other words, there is 'the Stone sound,' but Sly got back on his game by elevating his own greatist hit, "Thank You."

Oh. And there is that unadvertised "Music Lover" at the end of the Dance To The Music Extended Version. Sly has left a lasting legacy if this is to be his last disk. Put out your best stuff while you're still alive, Sly. Cause you know they are going to put it out after you are gone.

Melissa Harris-Perry Gets Show On MSNBC

MSNBC contributor Melissa Harris-Perry is the latest addition to MSNBC’s expanding weekend lineup. Her new program, set to air Saturdays and Sundays 10a-noon ET, will debut on MSNBC February 4th. The announcement was made by MSNBC President Phil Griffin. Chris Hayes will continue to lead off MSNBC’s weekend programming with his popular roundtable program ‘Up,’ which will begin airing from 8-10am ET on both Saturdays and Sundays. MSNBC anchor Alex Witt will expand MSNBC’s live news coverage in both the morning and the afternoon, with “Weekends with Alex Witt” airing 7-8a ET Saturdays and noon-2p ET on Saturdays and Sundays.

Harris-Perry, a long-standing political analyst and contributor to MSNBC, is a frequent guest of “PoliticsNation” with Rev. Al Sharpton, and also serves as occasional host of “The Rachel Maddow Show” and “The Last Word.” A highly accomplished author, scholar and speaker, Harris-Perry’s new program will continue MSNBC’s trend of bringing intelligent, informed voices to the cable channel’s weekend programming.

The Hollywood rumor mill has it that Steven Spielberg and George Lucas are teaming with the Wachowski Brothers to produce and direct "Environment Man: The Movie." I used my connections to get a peek at the super secret preproduction script.

It appears to be a combination of "The Matrix" meets "Purple Rain." Eman is working on the sound track and Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga are rumored to be romantic leads in the film.

The 3-D sci-fi action thriller has a $200 million production budget and will be distributed worldwide. Environmental Man has committed to a world tour to support the film.

Onika Tanya Maraj, better known as Nicki Minaj, is being linked to Environment Man. The hip hop world rumor mill is not confirming whether the link is professional or romantic. Reps for both would not comment for the record. Their fans want to know if they will perform together in 2012.

Minaj achieved commercial success after releasing three mixtapes between 2007 and 2009 and being signed to Young Money Entertainment in August 2009. Minaj released her debut album, "Pink Friday" in November 2010. It quickly became a commercial success, peaking at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 and being certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) a month after its release.

AAEA Calls on ABC to Give Donna Brazile a Chance At Hosting "This Week."

AAEA believes Donna Brazile would be a great host of the show. We called for her to get the hosting job when George Stephanopoulos left to host Good Morning America (GMA). Now George evidently has two jobs because he is coming back to "This Week" while still hosting GMA. Evidently ABC got impatient with Christiane Amanpour inability to move out of 3rd place (2.3 million viewers) behind "Meet The Press" (2.92 million) and "Face The Nation" (2.86 million). Amanpour left her post as CNN's chief international correspondent after 27 years to host "This Week," but is now returning to CNN.

GIVE DONNA A CHANCE. There is no better political mind Inside the Beltway (or Outside the Beltway). She brings that New Orleans 'flavor' to the airways and is a no-nonsense political tactician. Donna has a unique 'look' and is clearly a personality (and we know she has been holding back). At a very minimum, give Donna the same 16 months given to Christiane. Donna also has a certain 'flair.' She recently made a special guest appearance on "The Good Wife."

When the suits at ABC see this article, we hope they will take our advice and give Donna a chance. We also think the ratings would overtake both "Meet The Press" and "Face The Nation."

The NBA has race as an undeniable subtext in the current lockout and negotiations about profit sharing. Just look at the negotiating table: On one side sit the owners, all Caucasian males apart from Jordan, ranging from mid-40s to soon-to-be octogenarians. Across from them sit their 20- and 30-something employees, almost 84 percent of whom are African American males. The older white men are now asking the young black men to take a pay cut in order to cover their purported losses, upward of $280 million a year. Given that, it’s almost ridiculous they call “basketball-related income” the elephant in the room.

Once race becomes a factor in the discussion, it begins to tinge perceptions of everything and everyone. Just pick an area of American society and race CAN become the elephant in the room. The White House might have finally integrated, but the marketplace is still a bastion of White-ownership and Black lack of ownership. So a stalemate is going on in the NBA. The one thing that will solve this problem will be when both sides lose so much money that it hurts. Or a competitor threatens both sides. (Wash Post, 10/21/2011)

The self-proclaimed Seattle superhero who goes by the name Phoenix Jones unmasked himself Thursday morning at a court hearing. Jones, 23, whose real name is Benjamin John Francis Fodor, appeared in a court wearing a charcoal-colored mask and a superhero uniform under a black and gray striped shirt. A court officer asked him to remove the mask and he complied but put it back on after the hearing to speak with reporters — at which point, he dramatically removed it again to reveal his true identity.

Fodor was arrested Sunday after police say he pepper sprayed a group of people downtown as they left a nightclub. Fodor said he was trying to break up a fight when he was attacked. He spent about seven hours in jail before posting $3,800 bail.

Jones said he's the leaderof the Rain City Superhero Movement, which has conducted late-night patrols in Seattle since last year. (MSNBC)

Mr. Gregory has worked alongside prominent figures in history such as Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Medgar Evers, President John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy. Being one of the few members of The Movement still alive, Mr. Gregory is a walking history book. Bootsy's bass kills on this cut. Larry we love ya but Bootsy definitely served noticed that Sly would have been successful with a Bootsy. Ummmm. But Bootsy aint no Larry. Let's be clear about that. But come on Larry, you know you have to give him props on his thumping here. Bootsy went way down on the fret board WITH the mutron peddle. I mean Larry your fuzz did the same thing back in the day (think "Sex Machine").

Sly's production genius is in clear view if you listen down into the mix of the music. A close listen to his best stuff reveals his artistic genius. Freddie Stone was one of Sly's master painters. And Bootsy's vocals are nowhere near Larry's power. Yet Bootsy raps, which puts the Woodstock Nation genre up to date.

You have to listen to this. It lets you know that when Sly is trying, can't nobody touch him.

Sly dropped his new album today. And it is a killer. The new tracks could be teasers for more such brilliance to come. Yikes. The new cuts have sprirt. And gospel. Sly's "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" marks his entry into gospel. Okay, "Que Sera Sera" was gospel in tone. But it wasn't intended to be a gospel tune.

Elvis copied Sly's studded jump suit, buckle and sideburns, Sly is following the King into the gospel arena. Michael never got a chance to go gospel. But maybe there are some hidden tracks somewhere. Regardless, Sly left no musical STONE unturned during the entirety of his career. Some might question his down period, but nobody can question his musical genius and production - - both onstage live and in the studio.

NABJ Wrong Opposing Al Sharpton Having Show On MSNBC

Following a deal between MSNBC and Reverend Al Sharpton to host his own 6 p.m. show, a diverse array of liberals, conservatives, black journalists and media watchdogs have lined up to oppose the Baptist minister and civil rights icon's promotion. The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) opposed MSNBC's decision to hire Al Sharpton as host of its 6 pm timeslot, saying:

"This would still be just another non-journalist media 'celebrity' receiving a TV show based upon their name recognition, not their years of experience, training, ability and talent."

AAEA supports Al Sharpton and opposes NABJ's opposition to his hiring by MSNBC. Again, Blacks get hung up on 'not the right black,' when there was a time when we were just happy to get a black in the door. Al Sharpton has earned his seat at the MSNBC table. Although he is not a journalist, he is an internationally known talent who has proven himself on various stages.

Reverend Al Sharpton cancelled his scheduled appearance this week at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) conference following criticism by two of its members that MSNBC promoting him would be a mistake given that he's a "non-journalist" celebrity rather than a seasoned reporter. This is a huge miscalculation and could be rooted in jealousy.

Sharpton's support for the NBCUniversal and Comcast merger is a plus for him. Reverend Sharpton is clearly a savy businessman. He also appeared on FOX News numerous times, probably due to his support for Rupert Murdoch's opposition to a change in the rating system for television programming. If support for the merger added his elevation to the anchor seat, so be it. Brilliant. Journalists better do what Sharpton is doing if they want the seat.

There are also complaints that maybe the White House exerted influence over Jeffry Immelt, CEO of GE, owner of NBC Universal, to hire Al Sharpton to keep him out of the way during the 2012 presidential contest. Okay. And? Again, Sharpton leverages himself and there is nothing wrong with that.

NABJ should support Sharpton because it is unprecedented for a black man to be place in that position. To whine about him not being a journalist totally misses the point. (The Atlantic Wire, 8/5/2011)

P-Funk Mothership (Replica) Lands at the Smithsonian

The Smithsonian has acquired the Mothership replica used by Parliament-Funkadelic for its permanent music exhibition at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Bernie Walden was one of the Washington-based promoters who abandoned the Mothership in a Seat Pleasant junkyard in 1982. Nearly 30 years later, he helped the Smithsonian track down the replica. David George was the designer who built that replica. (Wash Post)

Skin Cancer and EPA's Tips to Avoid It: "Don't Fry Day"

As the seasons change and the weather warms, Americans find themselves spending more time outdoors under the glaring rays of the sun. While African Americans have a lower risk for skin cancer caused by the
sunshine, it is significant to know that they are also at risk. Generally, people with dark skin pigmentation have greater protection against UV radiation. However, the best way for everyone, including African Americans, to reduce the risk of skin cancer is to protect your skin and eyes from the sun by using sunscreen, wearing shirts, wide- brimmed hats , and sunglasses when outdoors. Of course, African Americans do not generally 'sun bathe' at the beach.

EPA is designating the Friday before Memorial Day is “Don’t Fry Day.” It is the perfect time for EPA to remind all Americans, at the start of summer, about the dangers of exposure to the sun and to offer safety tips to guard against harmful UV rays.

Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, is on the rise in America and is the most common cancer among young adults aged 25-29. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) SunWise program and the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention have partnered to provide simple tips on protecting yourself that could save lives.  One American dies from skin cancer every hour. It is the most common type of cancer in the United States, where skin cancer affects more than two million people each year, outnumbering the cases of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers combined. One in five Americans will develop the disease in their lifetime. Over exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer.

For “Don’t Fry Day,” (May 27 this year), EPA encourages Americans to
take these few, easy precautions when they are outside:

·         “Slip, Slop, Slap, Wrap.” Slip on a shirt. Slop on SPF 15+ sunscreen. Slap on a hat, and wrap on sunglasses to protect your body from overexposure to the sun
·         Seek shade. Find shade during the sun’s peak hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to reduce the risk of too much sun exposure
·         Check the UV Index. When planning outdoor activities check the UV Index to identify the times that pose the greatest risk for overexposure to the sun

EPA’s SunWise program is the nation’s largest environmental and health education program designed to encourage kids and their caregivers to practice safe sun habits.

Chilly Onscreen Chemistry between the 6 p.m. cohosts of local Washington, DC ABC News

You can't create chemistry. And watching Cynee Simpson, right, and Gordon Peterson, left, trying to deliver the news together is painful. The body language speaks volumes. Gordon clearly being more uncomfortable than Cynne. Is it a generation gap? Does Gordon resent the young upstart? Is there personal animosity? Whatever it is, it clearly shows up onscreen. The news producers at the show can surely see it. It is further contrasted by the excellent chemistry between Simpson and her 5 pm cohost, Leon Harris. Gordon had and has great chemistry with legnedary local newscaster Maureen Bunyan. Of course, she is closer to his age. They also kind of came up together on the Washington, DC news scene. Maybe he just wants Maureen sitting next to him instead of Cynne.

FCC & Justice Approve Comcast Merger With NBC Universal

The Justice Department, along with the Federal Communications Commissionon, approved Comcast's $30 billion acquisition of NBC Universal on Tuesday. The deal merges the nation's biggest cable and Internet service provider with NBC Universal's library of entertainment.

Most of the conditions for the merger apply for seven years. In addition, Comcast made several voluntary commitments to the FCC to ensure that the deal would be in the public interest. It will offer more children's programming and local news. It will also offer low-income households Internet service for $9.99 a month and stand-alone broadband Internet subscriptions for $49.99.

Comcast promised that it would not retaliate against broadcast networks or cable programmers for licensing their shows to competing firms such as Time Warner Cable or DirecTV. Comcast volunteered to treat all Internet content fairly - with similar speeds - even if the FCC's net neutrality rules are overturned by a court.

The FCC and Justice also demanded that Comcast relinquish its management stake in Hulu, the online joint venture NBC has with News Corp. and Walt Disney. But Comcast would be able to keep its financial stake in the Web site.

Former WAAA radio station owner Mutter Evans initiated Martin Luther King, Jr. commemorations five years before the federal holiday was passed. The 26th edition of the federal holiday honoring him included the 31st Annual Noon-Hour Commemoration in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It is one of the oldest Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial events in the United States.

Ms Evans noted:

"Take the time to acknowledge the person who had been so instrumental, and the freedoms and the liberties which we have acquired," said Mutter Evans, who organized the event in 1979. It makes me feel good from the standpoint that people continue to acknowledge and appreciate the history. It just seems like there is more division. Not everybody voted for him [Barack Obama], but those strives we thought we'd overcome, continue to rear their heads"

The event was originally held on King's birthday, but is now held at the Benton Convention Center on the federal holiday, which began in 1986. Winston-Salem native Clifton Graves spoke at this year's event. Graves, known nationally for his work in civil rights and education, spoke about everyone's power to help themselves and others.

Tyler Perry earned 19 nominationsds Wednesday, including best director for "For Colored Girls" and best screenplay for "Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too?" Those films will compete alongside "Just Wright," "The Book of Eli" and "The Kids Are All Right."

Perry's TBS series, "Tyler Perry's House of Payne," was nominated for best comedy series.

We predict that Darryl Fears, who has just been designated as an environmental reporter for The Washington Post, will become the nation's first 'celebrity environmental reporter.' Why do we say this: well because he is a veteran reporter who knows how to cut through the clutter to get to the meat of comtemporary issues. In short, Darryl has an 'eye' for the important story that others seem to miss. So once he mixes his Inside the Beltway savy with Hollywood Walk of Fame scrutiny, he will be a force to be reckoned with. We can see the headline now: "Hollywood Fears Darryl The Potomac Paparazzo."

We also hope that he will contrast the lifestyles of the rich and famous with their calls for conservation. We don't mind celebrities using their celebrity to promote green causes, but please point out the other 5 houses and 10 cars when standing next to a Prius and showing off their energy efficient home. The rest of us want what they have too. Think Al Gore. He's worth about $100 million now and we want to be just like him. Let's call it the Kennedy approach to addressing poverty: from a gated community on the waterfront. Renewable energy and energy efficiency are righteous goals, but so is the American dream. Can you have it all: many do. And we want ours too.

Today is our 25th anniversary. We were incorporated on November 20, 1985. The African American Environmentalist Association (AAEA) is the outreach arm of the Center for Environment, Commerce & Energy (Center).

You can see a listing of many of our activities during that time at our original website, which we converted to Multiply when the original Msn Groups platform ended). There is more activity information at our History page. My career has been very satisfying. From my beginning in the Fall of 1979 at the Environmental Policy Center (now Friends of the Earth) until today, the adventure has been incredible. I started out in the Washington, D.C.-based environmental movement. Jimmy Carter was president and was just finishing a rough 4-year run. I shook his hand at the Democratic National Convention in New York in 1980 not knowing that Washington was about to get a completely new makeover. The Reagan era was interesting and quite the challenge for the environmental movement. I still remember his 'no standard standard' for appliance efficiency standards. I also remember the Air Florida crash and the Metro subway accident on the day that I was walking back from the U.S. Department of Energy after testifying on appliance standards.

Well, without sounding like the old guy in the room sharing old war time stories that nobody really wants to hear, the situation today is as exciting as ever. We are embarking on trying to build biomass power plants in Mississippi, California and in Kenya. The adventure continues and I am having more fun than ever. Our team is lean and mean and green.

Tragedy on "Dancing With The Stars"

Bjorn Lomborg believes that many of the elaborate and expensive actions now being considered to stop global warming will cost hundreds of billions of dollars, are often based on emotional rather than strictly scientific assumptions, and may very well have little impact on the world's temperature for hundreds of years. Rather than starting with the most radical procedures, Lomborg argues that we should first focus our resources on more immediate concerns, such as fighting malaria and HIV/AIDS and assuring and maintaining a safe, fresh water supply-which can be addressed at a fraction of the cost and save millions of lives within our lifetime. He asks why the debate over climate change has stifled rational dialogue and killed meaningful dissent.

Lomborg presents us with a second generation of thinking on global warming that believes panic is neither warranted nor a constructive place from which to deal with any of humanity's problems, not just global warming. Comedy Central Rally To Restore Sanity and /or Fear

The first hour of the rally was a concert with The Roots and John Legend. And just as they 'killed' during Earth Day on the National Mall, they 'killed' again. Captain Kirk rocking the Capitol Jimi Hendrix style was particularly appealing. Oh how Eman salivates to have the Roots and Captain Kirk back him on his set one day. But we digress.

John Stewart and Stephen Colbert organized the 3rd intriguing rally of 2010 following the Glenn Beck rally and the One Nation rally.

The Adam Savage 'Mythbusters' experiment routines were cute. The wave and the seismic crowd jump were interesting.

Host John Stewart came out around 1 p.m. The singing of the National Anthem by '4 Troops' was a surprise. John called for 'no littering' and to leave the Natiaonal Mall 'cleaner than we found it.' Stewart said a rally is based on two things: 1) color and 2) size. He concluded that the rally was a perfect sampling of the American people. Stephen Colbert ("The Colbert Report") is a nut and came out of nowhere saying he was 'trapped in his fear bunker' 2,000 feet below the stage. Colbert simulated the ascent of the rescued coal miners in Chile in that FENIX capsule. He was dressed in an Evil Knievel red, white and blue outfit with a blue and red cap. Now THAT was an entrance. Colbert is a true nut and a great performer. Imagine John Stewart as the straight man. THAT is how over the top Colbert is in that get up and in his routine about the killer bees covered in peanut butter (to threaten people with peanut butter allergies).

Father Guido Sarducci (Don Novello) gave a benediction.

Cheryl Crow and Kid Rock rocked. Ozzy Osbourn rocked too, for a minute. The interspersed video clips were just weird.

A podium was brough out for John Stewart to give the keynote address. Stephen Colbert interrupted with counterpoint. And a podium was brought out for Colbert.

Kareem Abdul Jubbar represented the American Muslim community. R2D2 represented the machines.

Mavis Staples and Tony Bennett were excellent.

John Stewart gave a pretty good closing speech (below). Everybody came back onstage for the finale.

The Old Country Store is owned and operated by Arthur Davis. The 130-year old wooden structure was once a popular stop for purchasing everything from cotton to work boots. Creaky floors and rusty signs speak of days long gone by, lending an air of authenticity. Arthur Davis offers a lunch buffet with country favorites such as macaroni and cheese, mustard greens, field peas, dirty rice, and blackberry or peach cobbler. But nothing upstages the fried chicken.

Arthur Davis and his sons also opened a chain of restaurants called Wingo's in Vicksburg and Jackson, Mississippi and at nearby Alcorn State University. As the name implies, the venues specialize in wings smothered in Arthur's sauce.

"Mr D" also serenades his restaurant crowd with a song apparently called, "Grandma Was a Cornbread Woman."

DJ Reborn, left, is a Chicago native now residing in Brooklyn, New York. She has been spinning Soul, Hip-hop, Reggae, House, Afrobeat and more. Her sounds have been heard everywhere from corporate gatherings for Armani and Calvin Klein, to MTV's post awards parties as well as a private parties. Reborn has been the opening DJ at live shows for such renowned artists as The Roots, India Arie, Common, CaronWheeler, Talib Kweli, Saul Williams and most recently John legend.

Hollywood filmmaker believes Alberta's oilsands are a gift that could become a curse.

Cameron at a press conference on Wednesday in Alberta:

"It will be a curse if it's not managed properly. It can also be a great gift to Canada and to Alberta. I'm pragmatic enough to understand the powerful economic forces that are driving this development.

Cameron's two-day visit to northeast Alberta, which included aerial and ground tours of oilsands sites and a visit to the Fort Chipewyan aboriginal community, familiarized him with the complex issues in the region. Cameron's initial view of the massive open-pit mines and tailings ponds was of a "horrific" blemish on the natural beauty of the forest. But he later found some hope in talking with oilsands experts that new technology and improved research could improve the industry's environmental footprint. Cameron acknowledged industry's work to start reclaiming some of the disturbed lands, but suggested questions remain about the feasibility of fully cleaning up tailings ponds, industry's commitment to funding such long-term projects and government regulations to ensure they get done properly. And he recommended a moratorium on development on open-pit mines until some greener technology is developed.

Cameron's biggest concern was for the aboriginal people living downstream from the oilsands, many of whom have expressed worry about pollutants damaging the river and wildlife they depend on to survive. Cameron a study about the environmental effects on people downstream to be inconclusive simply because the people in Fort Chipewyan are afraid to drink their own water, they are afraid to eat the fish and they are afraid to let their kids swim in the river.

It had been reported that Cameron had agreed to help First Nation communities in the Fort Chipewyan area with legal action against the government, but the director backed away from that position. Comedy Central, which is owned by Viacom, will stage a National Mall Rally on October 30, that will feature both its late-night hosts, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. "The Daily Show's" Stewart announced on his show that his Rally to Restore Sanity, a.k.a. a Million Moderate March is:

"a rally for the people who've been too busy to go to rallies, who actually have lives and families and jobs (or are looking for jobs), not so much the Silent Majority as the Busy Majority."

Stephen Colbert counters:

"On October 30, 2010, I am calling for the nation to join me on the Washington Mall for the March to Keep Fear Alive. Shame on you, Jon Stewart -- America cannot afford a rally to restore sanity in the middle of a recession. . . . Did you even consider how many panic-related jobs that might cost most of us in the fear-industrial complex?"

Although the permit has not yet been issued, there aren't any hugely outstanding issues that would prevent or bar the signing of a permit. Although both Stewart and Colbert mentioned the Mall in their announcements, the permit application is for the north side of the Washington Monument grounds -- which does not include the Lincoln Memorial, Reflecting Pool or what is known as the Mall. Of course, that would put the White House in the background of the rally.

The Washington, D.C. rumor mill is running wild with reports that Lady Gaga will back Eman for his 3-song set at a gig after her Monster Ball Tour concert and fundraiser for Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 8 p.m. at Verizon Center. Lautenberg has a private suite with patrons contributing $2,500 a person for PACs and $2,400 for individuals.

The rumored gig with Eman and Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (Lady Gaga) would feature Eman's repetoire of "Susie Sensitive," "You Were Always On My Mind (Mother Nature)," and "Global Warming/Climate Change." Will the venue be in a private suite, or will it be at an as yet undisclosed location? Only the rumor mill knows for sure. But the rumor mill speculates that it could be announced at the Lautenberg fundraiser.

Generally, if a luxury suite is available, it can be rented for somewhere between $4,000 and $8,000. There are a range of seats available in each suite, but if the suite has 20 seats, plus two for the candidate and spouse. The suite lessor pays for the food and booze. So figure $100 per for that. Brings you to around $10,000 or so. You charge $2,500 a head for a high rollers. So that's $50,000. The suite lessor nets $40,000, minus some expenses. Hmmmm. And deduct $5,000 more for Eman's fee. Sampling the language of urban myth, black folklore, punk rock and teen angst, they create landscapes all their own. Illustrations by Rachel Dorrett.

Elwin Cotman is a fiction writer, poet, performance artist and activist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. An alumni of the University of Pittsburgh Writing program, he has been published in several magazines. These include The Dirty Napkin, Outsider Ink and The Fairfield Review. In 2005, he was selected to attend the Three Rivers Review writers' retreat. Currently, he is a member of the Cyberpunk Apocalypse writers' collective in Pittsburgh.

Elwin Cotman is a graduate student at the University of Maryland. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh writing program, and has taught Creative Writing to Washington DC elementary students. Elwin writes and performs stories that blend the personal with the mythic, the contemporary with the historical. He developed a narrative poetry workshop at the University of Maryland. His work has been published in the Fairfield Review, Outsider Ink and the Front Weekly. He was also a featured fiction writer for A Space Inside Reading Series.

Remembering Environmental Justice Legend Dana Alston

Dana Alston was 47 years old when she died 11 years ago on August 7, 1999.

Dana Alston, left, was a leader of the original environmental justice movement that started in the 1980's. She was one of the organizers of the first National Environmental Justice Leadership Summit in 1992. She participated in the meetings to convince the U.S. EPA to open an Office of Environmental Justice. She was a committed environmental justice activist and the movement clearly benefited from her leadership. We remember you Dana. And we will never forget you.

Dana Alston received a Bannerman Fellowship in 1992 in recognition of her leadership in the development of the environmental justice movement. The Bannerman Fellowship Program was founded in 1987 on the belief that the most effective approach to achieving progressive social change is by organizing low-income people at the grassroots level. In 2002, the Fellowship Program was renamed the Alston/Bannerman Fellowship Program in honor of Dana Alston.

Dana died on August 7, 1999 at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. Dana was a native of New York and lived in Washington, D.C. She was in San Francisco for treatment of kidney disease and consequences of a stroke when she died.

Her son, Khalil Alston-Cobb, now 17, resides in Clinton, Maryland. He is (or was at 16) a skateboard enthusiast (see videos). Here is how Khalil describes himself on his MySpace page:

To the extent that you reject this contention, then we must reject and ignore your complaints.

In the USA, fur farmers are regulated by their state department of agriculture and must operate under federal environmental standards, such as the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. Fur farmers have also developed a comprehensive set of their own standards, in consultation with veterinarians and animal scientists, to ensure the highest quality of animal husbandry. These standards are administered by Fur Commission USA, which is also responsible for ensuring they are revised and updated whenever required by current knowledge of animal care and farm management techniques. The project Trump International Golf Club & Residences, Puerto Rico (TIPR) has already established itself as one the top golf courses and residential resorts in the Caribbean, the property’s focus has been on a different kind of “green” of late - that of eco-friendly development.

Donald J. Trump states,

ENERGY CONSERVATION: Trump International Golf Club and Residences, Puerto Rico (TIPR) will take the following steps to initiate the use of alternative energy:

Solar Cells: TIPR is studying the use of solar panels to power a great portion of the club house. They are also organizing solar-power packages that will be available for the Estate Homes. The use of solar power lowers the dependency on fossil fuel and reduces the carbon emissions released into the environment from energy plants. Since solar technology is now blooming, the developers are able to offer Estate Home owners packages that are tailored to their desires.

Owners of the estate homes will have their choice of three energy efficient packages, but all will have some form of solar power:

100% Solar Powered Home: All energy included water heaters, air conditioning, appliances, etc. will be powered by solar.
50% Solar Powered Home: About half of all full power needs of the estate home will be powered by solar.
“Living Area” Solar Power: Air conditioning and Kitchen appliances powered by solar panels.

POLLUTION REDUCTION: During the development of the project, TIPR required from the contractors the implementation of pollution control measures to prevent or minimize impacts on the environment. As part of the mitigation measures, silk fences, hay bales, and truck cleaning areas have been installed to minimize soil erosion and final disposal of solids into the water bodies.

CONSERVATION OF MANGROVES: Trump International Golf Club and Residences, Puerto Rico has established a total of 90.1 acres of Mangrove and Wetland Areas as a conservation easement. To secure the protection of these acres of land, Coco Beach has prepared a title deed that includes the 91 acres dedicated as a Perpetuity Natural Reserve.

WATER TREATMENT: The Coco Beach Utility Corp. (previous name of the property) owns and operates a water treatment and recycling plant, with a capacity of over one (1.0) million gallons per day. This plant produces the fertilized water that is used to irrigate the golf course. With the water storage facility of over 16 million gallons, Coco Beach Utility Corp is capable of self maintaining the golf course for over 2 months in case of a dry season. By eliminating the need for potable water, Coco Beach Utility Corp is reducing the consumption of valued portable water supplies.

LANDSCAPING: The master plan of TIPR started with the implementation of 4,000 new trees, and continued with an additional implementation of 2,000 trees and palms and 900 transplanted trees.

Trying to maintain secrecy, Eman and Lady Gaga have been keeping a low profile in order to concentrate on the songs and videos. Clearly this collaboration will be the hottest thing to come out of Gagaland ever (if the rumors are real). Eman is attempting to enlist Lady G to join the fight against global warming. Our spies tell us that the duo are rerecording Eman's monster video "Global Warming/Climate Change." With Gaga's presentation and Eman's imagination, it will have to be something to behold.

Just as Lady Gaga was going to do some opening shows for Michael Jackson at London's O Arena, so too, we are hearing that Eman will do some opening sets for Gaga. Just one or two songs. Eman likes to get in and get out. It is rumored that Eman will rework "Susie Senstive" to "Lady Gaga" as an opening set song. And before you ask, there is no romance swirling between these two. I have special access to Eman and he has told me that he is committed to his chastity and I know he is not interested in marrying. Although our spies can neither confirm nor deny that TMZ paparazzi have photos of him consorting with Serena, Sandra and Elin around Tinseltown. 4. PVC-based sex toys.
Many sex toys are made of PVC (polyvinyl chlorides) and often contain phthalates. The former is hard on the environment, while the latter is hard on humans and has been banned from many toy manufacturers. However, the adult toy industry doesn’t have regulations imposed on it, so some companies are taking matters into their own hands. Big Teaze Toys has taken this into account since the beginning. 5. Vinyl or jelly toys.

7. Using condoms that test on animals.

8. Frou frou lingerie.
Sure, you want to break out the corset and garter belts every month, but for the most part, women are in their around-the-house clothes before doing the deed. Most are just as stylist as slips, camisoles and panties found in the lounge area of lingerie or department stores. Retailers like Figleaves and Nordstrom both stock a plentiful supply of organic underthings for men and women.
9. Using the Pill.
Many women reach for the Pill, but it isn’t the most environmental choice. The IUD is just as effective at preventing pregnancy and doesn’t harm our waters with synthetic estrogen, which has been known to find is way to water and change the gender of fish. Latex or lambskin condoms should always be used to practice safe sex and should be disposed of properly, which means throwing them in the garbage, not flushing them down the toilet.
10. Using non-organic sheets.
Go for a roll in the hay with organic sheets. Non-organic sheets usually contain dyes and pesticides that are harmful to the Earth. Look for organic bamboo sheets, which will wick away the sweat as you get your groove on. These sheets are as soft and luxurious as high thread count sheets. Bamboo is also naturally anti-bacterial. There’s also organic cotton and hemp silk for eco-friendly options that will make your bedroom ready for play.
11. Porn…yes, we said it.
Porn isn’t bad for the environment, but it does suck up energy whether it’s on your DVD player or the Internet. Instead of plugging up every time you and your partner want a sexy image, kill the lights, light plenty of candles and talk about your fantasies. This is an eco-friendly way to get your juices flowing while conserving energy.
12. Don’t be a cheapskate.
Be ready to spend when it comes to eco-friendly sex. There’s no way to have organic lube and PVC-free sex toys without spending a solid dime. Like with the sticker shock we encounter at Whole Foods, you may find the eco-friendly sex accessories to be well above the price you’re used to paying for such things. Ultimately, it’s your health and the state of the planet that’s paying, so pony up and get your priorities straight.

Eman Finds Evidence of Prawn Return in South Africa

When I traveled to South Africa in April, I had a secret meeting with Wikus van de Merwe in his converted prawn state. He was lucid, but depressed. We met in District 10. He informed me that the 2.5 million prawns were preparing for the return of their brethren. He was also optimistic that Christopher would keep his promise to convert him back to his human form. Christopher told Wikus the process would take three years. I brought Wikus some cat food and that seemed to please him.

We got down to business about the return of the prawns from their home planet. The malfunction that stranded almost two million of them here surely would not happen again. And the mistreatment of the prawns could lead to some animosity on the part of the returning group. Their technology is clearly superior to ours. The xenophobia, social segregation and experimentation meted upon the prawns are inexcuseable. And though South African officials and other world leaders are very nervous about the return, it has not led to more acceptance for the prawns left behind.

I met with representatives of Multinational United (MNU), the private military company hired by the South African government to manage the prawns. MNU still manages District 10 and there is some controversy about rumors that Halliburton is the power behind MNU. I must admit to some interest concerning the marketing of the prawn weaponry. I oppose the genetics experiments related to trying to get the weapons to work for humans though. MNU's illegal experiments on the aliens were exposed before Christopher left in the mothership and the experiment administrators were prosecuted.
I probably should not admit that I met with the Nigerian gang warlord who replaced Obesandjo, who was killed by Wikus with the alien mechanized battle suit, but I am interested in possibly marketing the alien mechanized battle suit.

Anyway, Wikus told me that the prawns have communications gear and that a group of ships will be returning with millions of prawns. He would not tell me whether the return would be friendly or hostile. He said he did not know because he was not completely trusted. My guess is that, at a minimum, they will get their brethren prawns. The question is: will they attack South Africa or the citizens of the Earth?

Harris Faulkner: FOX News' Secret Weapon

Harris Faulkner, left, has taken a circuitous route to FOX News. Now FOX likes for their women to be gorgeous and Faulkner sure does meet that requirement. Although not in primetime during weekdays, Faulkner is super sharp and could sit in for anyone of the primetime players at the number one rated cable news network. She could anchor any of those other cable news shows that FOX beats in aggregate.

And I have to admit to having a little crush on Harris. Sorry. She likes sunflowers and so do I.

Okay. She's black. Some, maybe many, blacks think FOX News is anti Black. Anti Obama. Yet Faulkner, by her very accomplished presence, would seem to blunt that charge.

"Larry King Live," the longest running talking head on the same cable network, is over. Larry King announced his retirement today. This comes amid published reports about his plummeting ratings. Bill Maher was his special 'requested' guest for this show and Maher was not gentle right from the start.

Maher questioned Larry repeatedly about whether he was being pushed. Although Larry put up a good front, it was obvious that he was mortally wounded. His entire demeanor screamed that he was pushed. I think his feelings were hurt because he probably felt that even though his ratings were slipping, he was an institution worth preserving. I would have to agree with this assessment. Plus, Larry used that Washington politician line and that was a clear giveaway: "Im leaving to spend more time with my family."

I guess there is nothing wrong with not wanting to admit that you were fired. General McChrystal 'turned in his resignation.' Larry was an institution. One of the greats. He has nothing to be ashamed of. There comes a time and place for all of us to step off the stage. There will come a time for Bill 'I worship myself' Maher to step down. So hold your head high Larry. You had one hell of a run.

Sly Stone Died Today

No he did not. And I apologize to Sylvester Stewart, his relatives, friends, colleagues and fans for the title. But this is an attempt to get props for Sly BEFORE he dies. For on the day of his death, the media will celebrate him with clips of his greatest hits and moments instead of celebrating the man while he is alive. Why not do the tributes now? His accomplishments are as great now as on the day of his death. Why not share this with the man while he is alive so that he can soak up some cheer for the cheer he gave us?

Actually, a Sly Stone documentary will be coming out soon that should provide some of that much needed cheer. See below

Sly & The Family Stone, at their height, were as big as any band could get. As big as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Bigger than the Jackson 5 and the Beach Boys. Sly was as big as Elvis and The King eventually copied Sly's sideburns, jumpsuit outfits and buckles. Sly spawned a plethora of similar sounding bands, with variations on the theme of course: Funkadelic, Earth, Wind and Fire, Con Funk Shun, The Bar-Kays, Kool and the Gang, Mandrill, and many many more. By the time Sly & The Family Stone had burned out, the land was covered with bands that had adopted the best of their sound.

Place Michael Jackson's "Thriller," Prince's "Purple Rain" and the Beatles "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" next to Sly and The Family Stone's "Stand" (plus "Thank You") and there is no contest. S&TFS win hands down. MJ's moonwalk on "Motown 25" was supercool, but was not the cultural event that the Sly & The Family Stone set represented at "Woodstock." S&TFS dominated the movie, album and live performances.

Now the tributes will include the missed concerts and the drug abuse subtext to the Sly story, but none of that can take away from their rise to fame and their legacy. That legacy is still in the grooves, er, digits. Sly would have been nothing without the Family Stone and the Family Stone would have been nothing without Sly. There never would have been a Graham Central Station without Sly & The Family Stone. So give Sly & The Family Stone their props now. All of the band members are still alive. And although too much muddy water has run under the bridge for them to reunite and attempt to reprise the past glory, nobody can take away what they did in their prime.

Google's YouTube Subsidiary Beats Viacom in Court

Google won a three-year legal battle with Viacom on Wednesday when a federal court ruled that Google's YouTube subsidiary is not liable for its users' copyright infringements. A U.S. district court in New York ruled YouTube is covered by a "safe harbor" clause in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that protects service providers from penalties for their users' copyright violations, as long as they address those violations once they're made aware of them.

Judge Louis Stanton:

"The provider must know of the particular case before he can control it. The provider need not monitor or seek out facts indicating such activity."

Viacom, the owner of MTV Networks and Paramount Pictures, maintained that Google bought YouTube knowing full well that the site was guilty of copyright infringement but turned a blind eye to users' violations. It asked for damages of $1 billion in its lawsuit. (CNNMoney, 6/23/2010)

Tony Hayward Goes Yachting After Congressional Testimony

BP CEO Tony Hayward attended the 'Round the Island Yacht Race' this weekend, just a day after his stonewalling testimony on Capitol Hill. The annual race is sponsored by the Island Sailing Club and pits competitors sailing around the Isle of Wight. It is one of the world's largest such races and attracts more than 1,700 boats and 16,000 sailors as yachtsmen compete with wealthy amateurs in the 50-nautical mile course around the island.

Hayward, pictured below, watched his 52-foot $700,000 yacht "Bob," made by the Annapolis, Maryland-based boatbuilder Farr Yacht Design.

Manute Bol Dies

Manute Bol died today. He was 47 years old. He spent 10 seasons in the NBA with Washington, Golden State, Philadelphia and Miami. He was dedicated to humanitarian work in Africa and was in the process of trying to build schools throughout Sudan. Bol died at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, where he was being treated for severe kidney trouble and a painful skin condition.

He is pictured at right with Washington Bullets teammate Mugsy Bogues. Bogues is a Wake Forest alum (my alma mater) and he would get us passes to basketball games on occassion. Frank Johnson played with the Bullets then too (another Wake alum - we lived in the same apartment complex near the Capital Centre).

I met Manute Bol in 1987 when he played with the then Washington Bullets (now Wizards). He played pool at a little strip mall near the Captal Centre (now demolished). I lived nearby and would stop by to play pool on occassion. One day as I was leaving, Manute was standing outside looking anxious. I asked him if there was a problem and he said his ride had not arrived and he needed to get home. I offered him a ride and he stretched all the way across the back seat (He was 7 feet 7 inches) of my Chevy. When we got to his townhouse he invited me in to drink beer. He said the team had him drinking lots of beer to help gain weight. I was a huge beer drinker back in those days so we chugged beers and listened to music. Bol was cool. (AP)

Gary Shider Dies

Gary Shider was the guy in Funkadelic wearing the diaper. We all saw him at one time or another and that was his official uniform on stage. I was a very unique signature for a dynamic musician and singer.

He died on June 16th at 56. He left quite a legacy of music as the musical director for Parliament Funkadelic.

He also was among 16 members of Parliament Funkadelic, including George Clinton, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Linda.

I Support Alvin "Bubba Gump" Greene

South Carolina Congressman and House Majority Whip James Clyburn might be livid at the prospect of Alvin M. Greene, right, being the state Democratic Party nominee for the Senate, but I think Mr. Greene will capture the imagination of South Carolinians and the nation. Talk about outsider. He makes Tea Party candidates look like big-spending Congressional insiders. Green will not only ride the anti-incumbent, anti-big government wave into Congress, he will also become a superstar and might even challenge Barack Obama for the Democratic Party nomination for the presidency in 2012. And if anybody can beat President Obama, it would be BubbaGump Green.

Sure, Greene has some pesky little scandals circling around him, but they seem to be minor, err, she's grown. That is the 19 year old college student accusing him of showing her some porn on a library computer. There are also some questions about his discharge from the military, that is, whether it was honorable or dishonorable. Greene says it was honorable but involuntary. That will play to the antimilitary crowd and to the military crowd.

Some are embarassed by Greene. But this will help him too. For Greene is the anti-Obama at a time of weakened stature for the president because of the oil spill in the Gulf and the political maneuvering in some elections.

Eubanks was with "The Tonight Show" since 1995 when Branford Marsalis left. Leno took over from Johnny Carson in 1992. In addition to playing the guitar, Eubanks also served as Leno’s comic sidekick.

Rickey Minor has served as music director for American Idol, Super Bowl, Grammy Awards and NAACP Image Awards. Minor has collaborated with such performing artists as Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Ray Charles and Beyonce.

Kevin Costner Wants Centrifuge Machine To Clean Gulf

Movie star Kevin Costner is promoting a water-oil separation device as part of the effort to clean up the oil spill in the Gulf. Costner claims the $24 million oil extraction device will clean oil from the water at a rate of 97 percent. BP will test the device, but the volume of oil and water to be separated from the spill is massive. Costner’s company, Ocean Therapy Solutions, provides the machine that can clean as much as 200 gallons per minute. The company reports it has 20 such machines ready to be employed.

The machines are basically sophisticated centrifuge devices that can handle a huge volume of water and separate the oil at high rates. The machines work by drawing in the infested water where it then breaks it down, allowing the oil to discharge through a separate pipe.
